How you are ranked at the end of the year determines what type of bowl game you get. We have lost one conference game in five years. Our third goal s to win a New Year's Day Bowl. If you can play in and win a New Year's Day Bowl Game, you will end up in the top four or five in the country. We have finished in the top four for 10 years in a row. Not every player we get is a good football player. But they have been winning for us. I had Deion Sanders there. He was not a great player. I am not saying that to get any credit for his success.
We have to discipline them until they can do it for themselves. That is a difficult thing for most people. The last quality we look for is persistence. If you are lucky enough to get those three qualities in a person, he is going to be hard to beat, regardless of his speed or size. If you have enough people with those qualities, you are going to be hard to be beat. We are going to try to continue to do things in the off-season to coach those things. Any day we don't scrimmage, we end up on the goal line.
We throw to the wideouts in the perimeter game. We run the bootleg, waggle, and naked protections. We do not run them much, but we have them. You have to have a plan if you are overmatched. If we are overmatched at the two tackles and they are getting upfield, we have a way to double them. We also have a way to sprint away from them. We have our sprint-out protection. We also have the ability to dash away from them. By dash we mean to pull the backside guard and get the quarterback on the edge if we are having trouble with the pass rush.
