There are several government middle schools and one high school, as well as a private parochial school that offers classes through the end of middle school. Of the approximately 5,000 people older than fifteen years of age, 961 reported no formal schooling at all, but 1,432 had education beyond the sixth-grade (primaria) level, and the 1990 census reported only 608 of the more than 9,000 residents as illiterate.

The Mexican women and men I spoke with, however, were not just telling me that their lives and loves were different than those of their parents’. Their point was that these relations were better—supposedly freer from constraint, more pleasurable and satisfying, perhaps even in some way more prestigious. The prestige of modernity is so omnipresent a feature of our intellectual landscape as to be invisible; it has become one of our unexamined habits of thought. We may accept without questioning that to describe something as modern means to suggest that it is superior to what has gone before.

The “Needle-in-the-Haystack” Method: Systematic Ethnographic Sampling The life histories of a relatively small number of Mexican women may be richly evocative portraits of how some women have responded to the constraints and opportunities of their lives by making certain choices about sexuality and reproduction.
