Robert also used a key treatment suggestion as you will see. Robert was asked to use exposure exercises and rehearsals to combat his social phobia. He first had to present in front of an imaginary person, then a small group, and finally an imaginary large audience. He was videotaped (with his permission of course) so he could get feedback on his nonverbal behavior.

We used relaxation techniques with Sarah as we discussed her molestation, and we also had her gradually work herself up until she was able to re-experience one of the episodes in her imagination while she was relaxed. The goal was for Sarah to re-experience the event in a safe, relaxed setting free of all negative consequences. If this occurs successfully, extinction is expected to occur. Sarah was quite frightened of this at first. "I don't really know if I can go through with this. It's scary.

Social and cultural factors also come into play. Much research has shown that if the person experiences a traumatic event and they have a good support system (family and friends), they will be less likely to develop PTSD. It also seems that attempting to cope with the situation (not Anxiety Disorders II 37 through avoidance) instead of becoming angry and blaming others also helps to avoid developing PTSD. Finally, some interesting research has examined memory disruption and memory loss. It seems that PTSD victims have short-term memory disruptions and are unable to recall certain events well if at all (Vasterling, Brailey, Cons tans, & Sotker, 1998).
