Transcripts, the microphysics of power and discourse, are powerful analytical concepts. But alone they are insufficient to allow a full interpretation of the archaeology of the modern world. The added dimensions required are those of gender and, because the colonial settlements of the Cape and the Chesapeake were supported by the extensive practice of slavery, of race.
